The use of biochar for the remediation of hydrocarbon contaminated soil

iWater was contracted to assist with the site assessment, remediation planning and implementation of remedial measures following a large hydrocarbon spill which impacted the soil of neighbouring farmland. This followed the implementation of soil remediation using Biochar, a carbon-rich material produced during the thermochemical decomposition of biomass in the absence or limited supply of oxygen. Following the application of the Biochar, iWater also augmented the soil with Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) degraders to enhance the bioremediation of the petroleum hydrocarbons.
